How Contemporary Hairstyles Affect Historical Costume Movies: The 1920s

So, for all of you overworked mothers out there… I am giving you my list of eleven easy Halloween costume hairstyles, including links to step-by-step instructions and video tutorials on how to create each of them. Your daughter will be a hit at school and neighborhood with girls oohing over her hair, with the natural look of this hairdo.

Princess Leia's hair buns are truly iconic and essential to recreating this costume.

Use the blow dryer diffuser attachment for additional definition. If you want 1982 Annie's curls, simply go through your wash routine and choose one of two options: 1) Detangle, and apply perm rods (choose your preferred size) to wet hair and sit under the overhead dryer.

Loop the two sections and pin with bobby pins then wrap the loose hair you left out in the middle to complete the bow.

There's very little about Lillian Gish's hair that reads of that period — which would be center parted, high on top, arranged at the back of the head, with long trailing ringlets (see center image) — but I suppose you could argue that it's evocative of the 1730s-40s, when the hair was worn in an arrangement at the crown of the head, and there were a lot of medium-length ringlets low on the ear and on the nape of the neck.
